LINDEN
- First-year North Montgomery High School girls basketball coach Ken
Hampton opened up his season with a dominant winning debut.
North Montgomery had three players score in double figures as the Chargers routed visiting Attica 66-22 Saturday afternoon.
Although
North Montgomery will be without senior point guard Tori Bowerman
(stress fracture in left foot) for at least a couple of weeks, the
Chargers' underclassmen have stepped up in her place.
Freshman
Kelsi Byrd led North Montgomery (1-0) with 17 points, while sophomore
Katie McIntire added 11 and freshman Kathryn Webster had 10.
"I
thought [Kelsi] had a very nice debut. She plays really hard and when
she does good things happen," Hampton said. "She sees the court very
well. She found a lot of people and a lot of people were getting some
easy buckets. She also had people set her up."
North
Montgomery's defense held Attica (1-1) to single digits in every
quarter, including outscoring the Red Ramblers 14-1 in the second
period.
"We were pretty well-balanced in terms of scoring. We
had a lot of shots in the paint," Hampton said. "We tried to use the
sideline break or the transition offense. We tried to push the ball up
the court and the girls executed pretty well."
Hampton also
acknowledged senior Whitney Hutson and Kelsi Byrd's older sister, Sami
Jo, stepped up on the rebounding and hustle end. They both finished
with five points apiece but contributed more than just a couple of
baskets.
"I thought Whitney Hutson played really well and did
a lot of different things for us," Hampton said. "Sami Jo Byrd had a
nice game, as well. She was rebounding and scrapping. She was hustling
and diving on the floor, doing the things that we've been getting her
to do. The underclassmen did lot of scoring. The upperclassmen did a
lot of the little things."
